41-1 shot Afleet Again wins BC Marathon

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Afleet Again kicked off the second day of the Breeders’ Cup by coming from well off the pace to score a 214-length victory in the $500,000 Marathon at 41-1 odds.

Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, Afleet Again ran 134 miles in 3:00.39 on Saturday and paid $85.20 to win for the first time in nine starts this year.

Birdrun was second and Giant Oak was another head back in third.

A.U. Miner was pulled up by jockey Calvin Borel and didn’t finish the race at Churchill Downs.

It was the first Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Butch Reid and the fifth for Velasquez.
