RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina redshirt freshman Giovani Bernard has reached 1,000 yards rushing for the season, becoming the program’s first player to reach the milestone in 14 years.

Bernard entered Saturday’s game at rival North Carolina State needing just 35 yards to reach 1,000. He got off to a fast start with a 13-yard run up the middle on his first carry, but didn’t crack the mark until a 5-yard carry early in the third quarter.

Bernard is the first Tar Heel to reach the milestone since Jonathan Linton in 1997, Mack Brown’s final season in Chapel Hill before leaving for Texas.

Bernard is averaging 107 yards per game, the most by any freshman in the country.
