PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Eli Carter scored 18 points and fellow freshman Malick Kone had 15 points and eight rebounds in Rutgers’ 80-66 exhibition victory over Rutgers-Newark on Sunday.

“There are some things to work with,” Rutgers coach Mike Rice said. “I like the effort. It’s just the details and some of the discipline on possession by possession that can make you scratch your head.”

Pedro Burgos led Rutgers-Newark with 26 points.

The Scarlet Knights will open the regular season Friday night at home against Dartmouth.
