SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — More than 200 volunteers harvested fruit and vegetables over the weekend to provide fresh produce to the hungry.
The produce — mostly apples — went to Second Harvest for distribution to the organization’s food bank network across 21 eastern Washington and five North Idaho counties.
The Spokesman Review (http://bit.ly/v9sKPL ) reports volunteers gathered an estimated 30,000 pounds of produce.
The annual end-of-season harvest began in 2007, with a handful of volunteers picking less than 6,000 pounds of produce. Since then, the effort has grown substantially,
