Alleged shooter, 70, appears in court.

A Camas man who was allegedly shot by his father after confronting him in his duplex on Nov. 3 was cited for assault on Monday, police said.

Thomas F. Reiter, 43, was cited for fourth-degree domestic violence assault for allegedly punching his father, Thomas J. Reiter, 70, in the face, said Capt. Shyla Nelson with the Camas Police Department.

Thomas F. Reiter was released from custody later in the day, she said.

Typically domestic violence cases have a mandatory booking if the suspect is arrested within four hours of the assault, Nelson said. The intent is to keep the individuals safe in the heat of the moment, she said.

The younger Reiter was cited several days after the incident and had medical issues to address, so he was released, Nelson said.

The elder Reiter was arrested Nov. 3 by Camas police for allegedly shooting his son during the disturbance. He made his first appearance in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of second-degree domestic violence assault on Nov. 4.

The father said he was drinking and smoking marijuana with friends in his apartment on Nov. 3 when his son came over and demanded money, according to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court. The elder Reiter told his son to leave, but the son returned later and was allegedly angry, yelling and demanding money. The father told police his son re-entered the apartment, shoved him onto the floor and repeatedly punched him in the face.

The elder Reiter told police that eventually he went to a table where he kept a .38-caliber Special revolver and told his son to leave the apartment. The son then told his dad to “go ahead and shoot,” the affidavit said.

Thomas F. Reiter told police at the hospital that he went to his dad’s apartment to get money. He said his dad made comments that belittled him in front of his dad’s friends and that his dad punched him first, the affidavit said.

Thomas J. Reiter is in the Clark County Jail and will be arraigned Thursday.
