SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame center Braxston Cave has been lost for the rest of the season.

Coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday that Cave will have surgery this week for a ligament problem in one of his feet. The senior starter left Saturday night’s game against Wake Forest in the second quarter with what was described as a mid-foot sprain.

Cave had started the last 22 games. He has a year of eligibility remaining and Kelly said he would be back next season.

He will be replaced by senior Mike Golic Jr. who has played in 12 games but will make his first start Saturday at Maryland.
