A man with a handgun tucked into his sweatpants robbed the Chkalov Shell station shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday and eluded police.

Preliminary reports described the robber as a Hispanic male, in his 30s, possibly with facial hair. He was wearing a black shirt and gray or white sweatpants.

He demanded money and fled on foot toward the nearby Bank of America branch.

The station is at 503 S.E. Chkalov Drive.

Police responded and searched the area. Officers used a tracking dog but the man escaped, an official said a couple hours later.
