METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The Saints have enough difficulty slowing down Matt Ryan and Atlanta’s passing game when their secondary is at full strength.
This Sunday’s meeting in Atlanta, with first place in the NFC South on the line, could be even more troublesome than usual for New Orleans’ defense.
When the Saints practiced on Wednesday, starting cornerback Tracy Porter and nickel back Patrick Robinson both stood off to the side, watching without pads. Porter hurt his neck in last Sunday’s victory over Tampa Bay, while Robinson has developed stomach pain since that game.
Coach Sean Payton says he hopes one or both can return this week. In the meantime, reserves Leigh Torrence and rookie cornerback Johnny Patrick are preparing to play significant roles in the secondary.
