Barberton — Around 100 youth volunteers from eight area high schools raised money for Southwest Washington Red Cross Disaster Services on Halloween by “Trick or Treating for Disaster.”

The students, who surpassed their goal of raising $1,500, collected more than $2,600 during the evening.

Students from Evergreen, Prairie, Battle Ground, Mountain View, Hudson’s Bay, Columbia River, Fort Vancouver and Union High Schools worked together to support relief services for local disaster victims.

In the past fiscal year, the local Red Cross responded to 107 fires, 10 floods and three storm-related incidents, and mobilized relief to 149 families affected by local disasters. The services are free to those affected by disaster thanks to the generosity of local donors.
