NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL is starting its own production company.
The league will work with former HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg on NHL Original Productions.
Greenburg is also producing sports documentaries for NBC’s networks.
The hockey venture will be similar to the widely popular NFL Films. It will produce documentaries and features for television partner NBC Sports Group, NHL Network, NHL.com and regional rights-holders starting later this season.
NBC said Thursday that Greenburg would also produce Bob Costas’ interview shows. Costas first started using the live town hall format under Greenburg at HBO. The first documentary, “Cold War on Ice: Summit Series ’72,” will premiere Jan. 2, the day cable channel Versus is renamed NBC Sports Network.
Greenburg stepped down in July after more than a decade leading HBO Sports.
