RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Researchers at Duke University and Microsoft are offering a technological fix they say can help uncover if images have been doctored, and might even help find you a parking space.
Duke computer scientist Landon Cox says the feature could be built into mobile phones to allow images or sound to be uploaded anonymously. But the data also would show if anything has been changed, much like an erasure smudge on a paper page.
The function could help media organizations test whether the growing stream of contributed photos and video meet journalistic standards of informing without twisting reality.
Cox says the feature could have commercial uses for anything that depends on verifying a GPS coordinate, like a service that promises to tell commuters where they can find an open parking spot.
