James Madison sinks Canisius 82-73 in opener

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — Humpty Hitchens scored 26 points and A.J. Davis added 23 points as James Madison pulled away in the second half to sink Canisius 82-73 on Sunday in the season opener for both teams.

Canisius led 64-63 with just over seven minutes to play in the game, but Julius Wells hit a 3-pointer and Hitchens scored seven of his points in a 19-9 run to end the game and give James Madison the win.

The Golden Griffins led by three points at the break but the Dukes outscored them 45-33 in the second half to seal it.

Wells finished with 13 points and five assists for the Dukes, who won their first season opener under coach Matt Brady in four tries. Hitchens went 4 of 9 from 3-point range and Davis hit 9 of 13 foul shots.

Harold Washinton led the Golden Griffins with 23 points.
