Mayor to ask Justice Department for review

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Spokane Mayor Mary Verner says she will ask the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct a review of the Spokane Police Department.

The review is like an audit that will seek to identify patterns or practices that either deprive individuals of their rights or that lead to discrimination.

The Spokane department has come under some harsh criticism for a case in which an officer was recently convicted in the case of a man who died at the hands of police in a convenience store five years ago.

The Justice Department must agree to perform the review.
