Washington, Canisius hold off Longwood 87-83

FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) — Harold Washington scored a career-high 30 points, including eight straight in a key second-half run, and Alshwan Hymes added 24 as Canisius held off Longwood 87-83 Tuesday night.

The Golden Griffins (1-1) led by 13 in the first half, but Longwood got within 44-43 at the break.

Washington, who transferred from Cecil College, scored 21 points in the second half. After Canisius built a seven-point lead, the Lancers (1-2) pulled ahead 73-71 with 4:08 left on a jumper by Jeremiah Bowman, who scored a career-high 27 points.

Washington then hit three straight jumpers and knocked down two free throws to put the Golden Griffins up by six with 1:36 to go.

Longwood got within three with 18 seconds left, but Canisius went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the final 14 seconds.

The Lancers’ Antwan Carter added 21 points and 15 rebounds for his 29th career double-double.
