Religious leaders from Southwest Washington will rally outside the office of U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, 1323 Officers Row, at noon Wednesday to urge support for programs that help people lift themselves out of poverty.

The event, sponsored by Washington’s Faith Action Network, is part of a nationwide effort to save programs that aid hungry and poor people from elimination or deep federal budget cuts. Attendees will form symbolic circles and call on Congress to protect programs that provide nutrition and income tax credits for the working poor, as well as poverty-focused foreign assistance programs that provide immunizations and disaster aid.

Murray’s office is being targeted because she is the co-chairman of the congressional “supercommittee,” which is charged with identifying more than a trillion dollars in spending reductions by Thanksgiving.
