YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A community action group and a large Eastern Washington dairy are squaring off in federal court over claims that the dairy violated the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws.

The group known as care, Community Association for Restoration of the Environment, says Nelson Faria Dairy in Royal City contaminated groundwater and failed to properly manage manure from thousands of cows.

The group filed suit against the dairy’s previous owners in 2004, and a settlement agreement was reached in 2006. Nelson Faria bought the dairy later that year and is obligated to operate the dairy under its terms.

CARE reopened the case in U.S. District Court last year.
