SNOHOMISH, Wash. (AP) — The Snohomish City Council voted to turn police duties over to the Snohomish County sheriff’s office.

The move approved Tuesday night is expected to save $2 million over five years and help stabilize the city’s budget.

The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/v1Bkt7) the contract must be approved by the county before it goes into effect in January but most of the 18 police officers are expected to be hired as deputies. Some civilian jobs will be cut.
