SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A judge in Marion County has officially authorized Oregon’s first execution in 14 years.

Judge Joseph Guimond (guh-MOND’) signed a death warrant Friday ordering that 49-year-old inmate Gary Haugen die by lethal injection on Dec. 6. Haugen was convicted twice of murder and was sentenced to death for the 2003 stabbing of a fellow inmate.

He has disregarded his lawyer’s advice and asked to waive his remaining appeals.

The state Supreme Court has not yet ruled on a request by death penalty opponents to halt the execution.

Department of Corrections officials briefed reporters Friday on the lethal injection process and their year-long preparations, saying they are committed to carrying out the execution in a professional and humane manner.
