BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) — In the shadow of a $2 billion state budget deficit, the governor and the state schools chief are planning to outline their education agenda for the Legislature on Friday.
Gov. Chris Gregoire and Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn are both scheduled to speak at the annual meeting of the Washington State School Directors Association.
The group is expecting more than a thousand school board members and superintendents to gather in Bellevue.
The state’s chief economist said Thursday that the state has taken in $12 million less than expected since September. However, the governor’s budget expects a drop in caseloads to mostly offset the loss in revenues. The state budget appears to still be about $2 billion in the red.
