COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) — The Island County prosecutor decided not to charge a teen-age boy suspected of starting the house fire that killed his mother.
Prosecutor Greg Banks told The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/rp9N0h ) an evaluation determined the boy is not an arsonist. Banks says any penalty would be negligible compared with the anquish the boy feels at the loss of his mother.
Detectives determined the 14-year-old boy had unknowingly set a fire while playing with matches last year at the home in Oak Harbor.
The mother, 32-year-old Dawn Campbell, alerted her son and his friend to the fire, and they escaped. Campbell reportedly attempted to rescue the family dog. She was overcome by smoke and died.
