EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — An Everett man who said he robbed banks out of desperation was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison.

Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wynne told Harold Massena that robbery was a poor option, despite his troubles.

Massena said his jobless benefits had run out and he was facing eviction in June when he gave an Arlington bank teller a note demanding money and saying he had a gun. The 52-year-old also admitted robbing a Snohomish bank in July and a Monroe bank in August. Prosecutors dropped the charge in the Monroe robbery in return for a guilty plea.

The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/uP5tBK ) Massena used robbery money to bay back rent and electric bills and to buy food for himself and his cat.
