Extra police officers will be looking for impaired drivers for the rest of the year, and they want others to help.
“Call a cab. Call a friend. Take their keys,” says a bulletin from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
From Thanksgiving day through Jan. 2, more officers than usual will be targeting DUIs in an effort to reduce traffic deaths involving impaired drivers, the bulletin said. In 2010, the traffic death toll from incidents involving impaired drivers was 11 in Clark County and 188 statewide.
Typically, police departments receive overtime grants from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
By 2030, officials hope to reduce traffic fatalities to zero.
Participating in the current DUI crackdown are sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and police officers from Battle Ground, Camas, La Center, Ridgefield and Washougal, the bulletin said.
