PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Census data show that nearly half of the black children in Oregon live in poverty.

The bureau’s American Community Survey estimates 49 percent of the state’s 20,000 black children were poor in 2010.

Other minority groups also have high poverty rates for children: 41 percent for Indians and 35 percent for Latinos.

The rate for white children is 19 percent.

Nationally, about 22 percent of children overall are poor. That means they live on less than $430 a week for a family of four — less than half the Oregon’s $48,000 annual median family income.

The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/BHnL3m ) experts say a higher jobless rate is one reason for the higher poverty rate for blacks.
