Bjoergen wins 5K WCup freestyle event in Finland

KUUSAMO, Finland (AP) — Three-time Olympic champion Marit Bjoergen extended her lead in the cross country World Cup on Saturday by winning her third consecutive race in Saturday’s 5-kilometer freestyle event.

The Norwegian pushed hard from the start and clocked 11 minutes, 45.3 seconds as she crossed the finish line. Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla was second, 11.6 seconds behind the race favorite.

Vibeke Skofterud of Norway was third, 12.9 seconds back.

Bjoergen also won the 1.2K sprint in Kuusamo on Friday and the 10K freestyle World Cup opening event in Sjusjoen in Norway last weekend.
