MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — The leader of the U.S. branch of a defunct Islamic charity will have nearly two months of additional freedom before his nearly three-year prison term begins.
Pete Seda was convicted last year of helping smuggle $150,000 to Saudi Arabia. He was sentenced in September, and a federal judge wrapped up his case this week.
The Medford Mail Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/vZo3Kr ) that Seda was ordered to report to federal prison in Sheridan by Jan. 23. Court records show he’ll also be required to forfeit nearly $20,000 in bail money to help cover the costs of his publicly funded defense.
The delay before Seda’s prison term begins will give his lawyers more time to challenge his conviction and file a request that he be kept out of jail during his appeals.
