BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Australian Olympic swimmer Kenrick Monk will not be charged by police for falsely claiming to have been the victim of a hit-and-run car accident.

The 23-year-old freestyler broke an elbow in September when he fell from a skateboard, later complaining to police that he had been hit by a car. He withdrew the claim days later and publicly apologized, saying he had been too embarrassed to tell the truth.

Queensland state’s assistant commissioner of police Peter Martin has written to Monk to say he would not be prosecuted, the Sunday Mail newspaper reported.

State premier Anna Bligh said people would “raise their eyebrows” at the police decision. She said Monk, who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, should have “learnt a very valuable lesson.”
