ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Elisabeth Goergl of Austria is in the lead following the first run of a World Cup giant slalom while Lindsey Vonn remains well back after playing it safe on the challenging course.
Goergl finished the first of two runs Saturday in 1 minute, 4.46 seconds and is ahead of Lara Gut of Switzerland by 0.59 seconds.
Julia Mancuso had a solid performance and is in fourth place, less than a second behind Goergl.
Vonn’s confidence was soaring heading into this event, especially after winning the season-opening giant slalom race in Soelden, Austria, last month. But on a course that’s always given her trouble, Vonn never found her rhythm. She’s 2.12 seconds off the lead.
Her skiing has been limited after tweaking her back in training last week.
