Heavy rains destroy pet food at food bank

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Volunteers have been responding with donations after heavy rains last week destroyed thousands of pounds of pet food at a pet food bank in Portland.

The Oregon Public Broadcasting (http://bit.ly/tcwHbp ) reports rain last Tuesday leaked into the warehouse where pet food is stored by the non-profit Pongo Fund. It ruined thousands of pounds of cat food.

The non-profit group provides pet food to animals of people who can’t afford it. Executive director Larry Chusid says without it, food intended for people end up becoming pet food.

He says donations have poured in since last week and the fund has raised enough to cover half of its loss.
