MALAGA, Spain (AP) — Malaga beat Villarreal 2-1 in the Spanish league on Monday night on goals by Jeremy Toulalan and Francisco “Isco” Alarcon, both purchased during the summer as part of an $85 million overhaul.
Toulalan scored in the fifth minute and Alarcon in the 40th. Marco Ruben had tied the score in the 16th minute.
Malaga played a man down from the 75th minute, when Toulalan received his second yellow card and goalkeeper Willy Caballero made a diving save of Borja Valero’s resulting free kick.
Malaga (7-4-2) is fifth, three points behind Levante for the final Champions League berth. Villarreal (3-5-5) is 12th,
