SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Former NFL player Corwin Brown has filed a motion saying he will use a mental defect defense against charges that he struck his wife and held her against her will at their northern Indiana home.

Brown’s attorney, William Stanley, says he believes Brown’s actions on Aug. 12 may have been the result of brain injuries suffered while playing football.

Superior Court Judge Jane Woodward Miller on Wednesday set a Jan. 11 status hearing date for Brown’s attorney and prosecutors to identify possible doctors who can evaluate Brown’s mental status.

Stanley says he likely will take the unusual step of asking Miller to appoint doctors from outside the area who are familiar with such brain injuries.
