SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Spokane County officials plan a celebration Thursday as a new $173 million sewage treatment plant goes into operation.

Utilities Director Bruce Rawls says the plant will improve water quality in the Spokane River.

The Spokesman-Review reports (http://is.gd/djuh3R ) the builder, CH2M Hill, still has to prove the plant can meet higher standards in the summer for treating ammonia and removing phosphorus.
