WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Lamar Kearse scored 21 points and Isaiah Wilkerson added 19 and nine rebounds as New Jersey Institute of Technology held off a late surge from Army to win 54-53 on Wednesday night.

Josh Herbeck’s last-second shot rimmed out, dashing the Black Knights’ comeback attempt.

The Highlanders (3-3) led by as many as 16 points in the second half and held a 54-44 lead with 3:43 to play. Army closed out the game on a 9-0 run, but could not pull ahead.

The Black Knights’ Jordan Springer had a chance to tie with 20 seconds left, but missed his foul shot that would have completed a three-point play. NJIT rebounded and Army fouled Ryan Woods, who missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Army got the rebound, setting up the final shot.

NJIT finished the game 0 for 5 from the line.

Ella Ellis scored 11 to lead Army (2-5).
