NEW YORK (AP) — Evan Morrison broke the record for the 17.5-mile swim from Sandy Hook, N.J., to lower Manhattan’s Battery Park, winning the Ederle Swim on Sunday in 5 hours, 24 minutes, 53 seconds.

The 31-year-old Morrison, from Goleta, Calif., broke the mark of 6:06:01 set by Elizabeth Fry in June.

Emma Otto-Moudry, a 16-year-old swimmer from Ithaca, N.Y., was second in 5:36:04.

The race is named for Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel.
