Ex-Southern Indiana coach loses NCAA appeal

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The NCAA has rejected an appeal from former Southern Indiana coach Rick Herdes to overturn its two-year show-cause penalty for infractions committed at the school.

The ruling, released Tuesday, says there is no basis to overturn the original findings. The penalty means a school wanting to hire Herdes would need to explain its decision to the NCAA.

The Division II infractions committee ruled in February that a former Southern Indiana assistant coach arranged for fraudulent academic credit for one player, provided improper benefits to another and gave false or misleading testimony during the investigation.

The committee said Herdes failed to monitor the activities of that assistant and instructed a second assistant coach to provide impermissible transportation to a recruit.

Herdes resigned in 2009. The school has been put on probation for one year.
