HONOLULU (AP) — Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson is apologizing for an “excessive” delay during Saturday’s Hawaii-Louisiana Tech football game in Ruston.

The officiating crew took 22 minutes to conduct an instant replay review, which Benson on Tuesday called “an embarrassment to the WAC.”

Benson says the instant replay official “failed terribly” in managing the review process. He added that steps have been taken to prevent it from happening again.

Existing WAC policies say that if a call can’t be overturned in 2 minutes, the play in question must stand.

The review occurred in the second quarter after Hawaii called a timeout. There was confusion on when the time out was granted and whether the play counted.

Hawaii, which is playing its final season in the WAC, beat Louisiana Tech 44-26.
