ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Forget, for a moment, the anticipation of the start of the NHL season. Washington Capitals forward Brooks Laich’s stories about his forgotten paychecks are the best tales to hear headed into opening night.
Laich said Thursday he doesn’t play for the money. As evidence, he told how twice he’s put paychecks away and forgotten all about them.
One ended up in his glove compartment for months. The other was in his closet until his mother reminded him about it.
Laich re-signed with the Capitals over the summer. He’s getting $27 million over six years — and he says he now has direct deposit.
He says he came back because he wants to win the Stanley Cup. The journey begins Saturday when Washington opens against Carolina.
