FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Kenrick Ellis was expected to be a big part of the New York Jets’ defense when they drafted him in the third round in April. And, he still might be — at some point.
But so far, the nose tackle has been stuck on the sideline as an inactive player. It has been mostly a numbers thing, as coach Rex Ryan suits up more defensive backs than linemen, based on the opponents’ offense.
Ryan says “it’s just a matter of time” before Ellis makes his NFL debut, but it might not be this Sunday against the New England Patriots.
He was drafted amid some legal troubles and is scheduled to go on trial in February, but he’s not allowing that to distract him on the field.
