MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) — A 12-year-old boy has been charged with negligent homicide after a toddler in his care suffered a fatal head injury.

The 12-year-old, who has not been identified by police, has been taken to a Yamhill County juvenile detention center on Friday.

The McMinnville Police Department says the 12-year-old had been babysitting several children in a home when the toddler suffered the head injury on Monday.

The toddler, a 16-month-old boy, was taken by ground ambulance to the Willamette Valley Medical Center, where he was declared dead.

Investigators were originally trying to determine if the death was accidental.

The 12-year-old has been charged with one count of criminally negligent homicide.
