NEW YORK (AP) — Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman has been suspended three games and fined $1,250 for head-butting Daniel Paladini of the Chicago Fire.

Beckerman was automatically suspended for one game and fined $250 for receiving a red card in the 11th minute of the game on Sept. 28.

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber on Friday upheld a disciplinary committee ruling that added two games and $1,000 to the initial discipline. The committee said Beckerman’s actions “demonstrated utter disregard for the safety of his opponent.”

The MLS Players Union had appealed the committee’s decision.

Beckerman sat out Saturday at Los Angeles and will serve his additional two games Oct. 14 at Colorado and Oct. 22 at home against Portland in Salt Lake’s regular-season finale.
