MOSCOW (AP) — Dinara Safina says she hasn’t decided yet if she will keep playing tennis, contradicting brother Marat Safin’s announcement that she had retired.
The former top-ranked player said on Twitter there has been no official announcement and asks that she be given “some time and I’ll let u all know.”
Safin said earlier Friday that his younger sister had decided to quit the sport at 25 years old because of chronic back pain.
Safina began an indefinite break from tennis in May after two years of back problems.
She turned pro in 2001 and won 12 titles on the WTA Tour. She became No. 1 on April 20, 2009, and spent 26 weeks at the top. She injured her back early in 2010 and dropped out of the top 20 by the end of the year.
