Seattle making final push for top spot in MLS

SEATTLE (AP) — After raising their third straight U.S. Open Cup title this week, the Seattle Sounders FC were quick to note the other result that fell in their favor that night.

It happened thousands of miles away when the New York Red Bulls beat Los Angeles 2-0. That result left open the slimmest possibility that the Sounders could catch Los Angeles in the race for Major League Soccer’ best regular-season record.

With three games left, the Sounders are seven points behind the Galaxy. A win on Saturday against Philadelphia would pull Seattle within four points with each team having two games left.

It’s unlikely the Sounders will catch the Galaxy, but even if they don’t it’s still been an impressive late-season run.
