Top-ranked Wozniacki loses at China Open

BEIJING (AP) — Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was knocked out of the China Open quarterfinals on Friday after losing to Flavia Pennetta of Italy 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2).

Also, Monica Niculescu of Romania rallied to beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and 11th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland advanced after Ana Ivanovic of Serbia retired with back trouble while trailing 6-3, 3-2.

In the men’s tournament, third-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic reached the semifinals by beating Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-1, 6-0, and Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia defeated Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-2.
