DENVER (AP) — The Western Governors’ Association is looking for ways to promote outdoor recreation to strengthen the western economy.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire says the association wants to find ways to encourage volunteer projects and conservation to improve the West’s recreation assets.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert says the leisure and hospitality industry added 3,500 new jobs to Utah’s economy in 2010, accounting for 20 percent of all new jobs created. He says the West needs to do a better job marketing the region to attract more tourists.

An advisory group will offer preliminary recommendations to the association in December.
