LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — The ice-covered sliding track at Mt. Van Hoevenberg has opened for the season, despite unseasonably warm temperatures.
Five past USA Luge Olympians were in the group that opened training Thursday morning. Chris Mazdzer was first down the track for the season, sliding across ice even though it was 54 degrees outside.
Mazdzer says “it’s about time” the teams finally got on ice. Training was to have started Monday, but the Adirondack Mountains have seen daytime highs hover about 20 degrees above normal for this time of year.
The track where the U.S. bobsled, skeleton and luge teams do much of their training has a refrigeration system that can keep the runs iced even in warm weather.
