PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Some state and union officials are talking about a proposal for “bridge” health coverage that would allow some Oregon state employees to retire early.
The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/oUDcPQ) it could apply to workers who are eligible for full pension benefits but not yet eligible for Medicare. “Bridge” health insurance could head off layoffs as the state makes budget cuts.
State agencies have been told to prepare for cuts of 4 to 11 percent. State lawmakers will have a better idea of the situation on Nov. 21 when state economists present a revised revenue forecast.
The “bridge” health talks have been conducted by the state Department of Administration Services and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
