Although Columbia River had three turnovers in the first half, their defense stifled the Trapper offense for all four quarters.

The Chieftains’ defense held Fort Vancouver to 19 yards of total offense for the entire night, while both Kevin Sandison and Micah Figueroa returned interceptions back for touchdowns.

Remick Kawawaki struck first for Columbia River on a 25-yard run early in the first period. It would take ten minutes for the Chieftain’s to find the end zone again. However, due to some inspired Fort Vancouver defense that prevented the River offense from a first down on back-to-back drives.

Darius Raiford scored the second Chieftain touchdown on a 1-yard run. This was followed by an interception that was returned by Figueroa for 26 yards on the next offensive play for the Trappers.

Raiford ran in the only score of the second quarter, giving Columbia River a 25-0 lead going into the half.

Columbia River returned for the third quarter playing energized football, scoring on their next two offensive series on runs from Kawawaki and Frank. Sandison returned an interception 17 yards for the final score of the game.

“Turnovers are a mystery,” River coach John O’Rourke said following the game. “A lot of it was really a lack of concentration. The kids came out and did a better job the second half.”

Kawawaki led the team with 89 yards rushing on seven attempts, while Frank showcased his accuracy and extended plays with his legs.

“He’s a real good playmaker and he’s improving his passing accuracy and he always tries to run,” O’Rourke said. “He’s a good runner.”
