GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) — The state Department of Ecology was responding two new oil spills Saturday, after a barge carrying a 5-ton crane sank in Gig Harbor and fishing vessel in Tacoma’s Hylebos Waterway spilled about 100 gallons while transferring fuel.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports (http://bit.ly/pS7gWu ) that the barge is owned by a company called Marine Floats, which has deployed boom and absorbent materials to help contain the spill.
The spill in Tacoma occurred as crews aboard the 195-foot fishing tender “Eastern Wind” were transferring fuel from one tank to another. An Ecology spokeswoman says environmental damage was minimized because the vessel’s owner, Trident Seafood, had taken the precautionary measure of placing booms around the vessel during the fuel transfer, as is standard practice.
Emergency responders planned to use skimmers to help collect the spilled fuel.
