SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — Shaun Rutherford threw for three touchdowns, all in the first half, and completed 17 of 26 passes for 243 yards to lead Texas State to a 46-21 victory over Lamar on Saturday night.

The Bobcats (5-2) pulled to a 35-0 lead midway through the second quarter after Rutherford’s touchdown passes and a pair of scoring runs by Tim Hawkins.

The Cardinals (3-3) finally scored late in the second quarter on a short run by Caleb Harmon. They scored again late in the third quarter when Jeremy Johnson connected on a 12-yard pass to Marcus Jackson.

Johnson ran 59 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 38-21, but that was as close as the Cardinals came.

Darryl Morris forced a safety later in the quarter and Chris Nuthall ran in for a touchdown for as clock ran out to buttress the Bobcats’ victory.
