Hooray to the Vancouver City Council for finally considering a ban on smoking in our city parks. Those who choose to smoke do not have a right to force secondhand smoking on the rest of us in parks, walking down the street or through the farmers market or at the fair, outdoor seatings of restaurants, or anywhere else.
Cigarette butts are among the most littered items on our streets and on beaches. Smoking-related illnesses are among the most costly and preventable health hazards in our society. It’s amazing that it’s a perfectly legal product.
I challenge those who smoke to try quitting the bad habit for good and stop feeding the tobacco companies. I congratulate those who have successfully kicked the habit. That is a major accomplishment.
