SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Police killed the driver of a stolen car after a chase early Monday in Salem ended in a crash.

Officers spotted the car that had been reported stolen Sunday night, and the driver attempted to flee.

Police say the chase in downtown Salem around 1 a.m. lasted about three minutes at 30-to-50 mph. They say the driver ran several stop signs, crashed through a stop sign and into a parked car.

As officers approached the car, the department says the driver failed to comply, and his actions “placed officers at the scene in imminent danger.”

Two officers fired. The man died at the scene.

The officers have been placed on paid leave for an investigation by Oregon State Police and the Marion County district attorney’s office.
